Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant

Mudbrick Vineyard

Explore our variety of Waiheke Island produced, hand-picked and harvested bespoke wines. Exclusively available in our restaurants, at our cellar door and online.

Established in 1992, it’s difficult to imagine a more lovely location – at the top of undulating farmland scattered with native flora and fauna, Mudbrick is found nestled amongst manicured, aromatic Potager Gardens and acres of established vines overlooking the ocean, Rangitoto volcanic island and Auckland city in the distance.

Mudbrick has officially released three Icon wines following the exceptional 2019 vintage on Waiheke Island.

Mudbrick Vineyards Icon wines are Velvet, a Cabernet Sauvignon predominant Bordeaux Blend. Francesca; representing the very best Chardonnay and the first release of the Oscar; a Syrah produced from small parcels of Mudbrick’s top vineyards.

The Icon wines are a toast to Mudbrick’s 25 years of winemaking on Waiheke Island. The 2019 Mudbrick Icons are a true representation of the terroir and the winemaking style at Mudbrick.

Each of the Icon wines are estate grown, hand harvested and made using traditional techniques including natural fermentation and ageing in French oak barriques.

The aim is to bring forth a structured, intense and powerful wine, reflective of Mudbrick Vineyard’s ongoing commitment to its stunning terroir, transitioning organic vineyard management and quality focused winemaking practices

Patrick Newton, Winemaker at Mudbrick Vineyard is proud to release the Velvet and Francesca but especially the very first Oscar. "Oscar is a wine that both the Viticulturist; Nick Otto and I have been working on for a number of years. By building an understanding of the unique growing habits of Syrah within our three sites, we were able to identify small parcels that produce superior Syrah".

The 2019 Velvet is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 53%, Merlot 19%, Petit Verdot 17% Malbec 11%. The 2019 Mudbrick Velvet appears inky black in the glass. Displaying complex aromas of cassis, violets, liquorice, plums, coco, and spice. The palate is concentrated with dark fruits, plush round tannins and a long pure finish. This wine will age gracefully for up to 20 years.

At Mudbrick we treasure opulence, texture and romance… our flagship wine is named Velvet of course, because the word embodies the tactile, decadent and seductive nature of our most prized and finely crafted wine.” Robyn Jones, Co-Owner Mudbrick Vineyard “The 2019 growing season was everything we could have hoped for and perfect conditions to release a truly exceptional Syrah named after our son, Oscar’’.

The 2019 Mudbrick Oscar is 100% Syrah from the Mudbrick, Shepherds Point and Seaview Road vineyards. It displays intense aromas of cassis, plum, camphor and cracked black pepper with plush round tannins and a long persistent finish. This wine will age up to 15+ years

The 2019 Mudbrick Francesca is 100% Chardonnay made from the Hawke’s Crest, Mudbrick, Shepherds Point and Seaview Road vineyards. Francesca displays complex aromas of limes, grilled nuts, stone fruit and toasty oak. The palate is concentrated with citrus and creamy notes with fine acidity and a long focused finish that will develop gracefully up to 10 years in bottle.

The 2019 Mudbrick Velvet retails for $150 a bottle and both the 2019 Mudbrick Oscar and Francesca retail for $120 a bottle, all of which are available in limited quantities from Mudbrick Vineyard’s tasting room, wine club, online store, as well as their onsite restaurants. The Mudbrick Icon wines are available en primeur to Velvet Society members before public release each spring. 2020 is a year to watch with another incredible vintage resting in barrel.
