Welcome to the Coal Pit e-Cellar Door
Family owned Coal Pit from Gibbston in Central Otago, is committed to producing world class wines from their BioGro organically certified vineyard and on-site winery. Glacially formed schist based soils on elevated north facing slopes consistently yield award winning wines of great structure and elegance.
Inter-generational sustainability is a driving force for the small team, with recent establishment of a native planting programme and membership to the Porto Protocol – a global wine community dedicated to sharing knowledge and solutions to bring climate action to life.
The Coal Pit name is derived from the historical area in the nearby mountain ranges which provided the early pioneers, musterers and gold miners with coal while the flagship Pinot Noir ‘Tiwha’ pays tribute to the owner's late father. All the iconic labels are designed by acclaimed New Zealand artist and close family friend, Chris Heaphy.

Coal Pit Tiwha Central Otago Pinot Noir (2022)
Excellent bouquet and style with a core of place and definitive style showcasing savoury spices and plum, dried raspberry and earthy qualities.
Firm yet finer tannins profile and backbone of acidity lead into flavours that mirror the bouquet. Well made, youthful and settled into this stage of maturing in a hold pattern for now.
Well-made and lengthy with a raw energy appeal, decent oak and lengthy finish.
Best from 2027 through 2037.

Coal Pit Tiwha Central Otago Pinot Noir (2022)
Refined and gorgeously expressed, showing sweet cherry, dark plum, olive, clove, porcini and toasted almond nuances on the nose.
The palate displays excellent concentration and silky flow, splendidly complemented by plush texture and layers of polished tannins, making it wonderfully harmonious and structured.
At its best: now to 2035.

Coal Pit Tiwha Central Otago Pinot Noir (2022)
Sweetly fruited nose, smoke, dusty gravel, red fruits, plum, wisps of herb, a boldly fruited style. Richly flavoured palate based on raspberry and liquorice, integrated and ready to enjoy, it’s all about the generosity of expression. With air, there’s liqueur fruits amplifying the rich, sweetly fruited core, a style guaranteed to win the hearts of many.

Coal Pit Tiwha Central Otago Proprietor's Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (2023)
A gorgeously styled, barrel-fermented rendition, the enticing bouquet shows grapefruit, crunchy apple, lemon peel, oatmeal and beeswax nuances, leading to a finely flowing palate that's impressively concentrated and splendidly textured with saline mouthfeel.
Wonderfully structured by vibrant acidity, finishing superbly long and captivating.
At its best: now to 2033.

Coal Pit Central Otago Proprietor's Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (2023)
Fascinating nose triggering different impressions, smoke, snow pea, grassy aspects along with a sense of sumptuousness. Powerful palate, flavours dancing between herb, citrus and snow pea, with an almost minty backdrop. A drier expression, a cooling core of acidity brings real raciness, I suspect a wonderful food choice. Not your typical SB, bravo to that, a wine to contemplate.Rating Excellent

Coal Pit Central Otago Pinot Rosé
(2024)
Again the subtlety card before fruit jelly, red apple, nectarine and a stony mineral quality reveal themselves. Great texture, chewiness to the structure, silkiness building, while the flavours swell as it flows to a long close. Fleshes out nicely on nose and palate with air. Still some youthful tautness; while already enjoyable I suspect it will really hit its straps in the months ahead.Rating Excellent

Coal Pit Tiwha Central Otago Pinot Rosé (2023)
An emerging star label…..bright, light pink. Already delicious, it is vigorous and vibrantly fruity, with delicate peach, watermelon, strawberry and spice flavours, lively acidity, and a dry finely poised, long finish.
