Two Paddocks
Proprietor's Reserve The Major General 2022 750ml 6 bottle minimum
Founded in 1993 by the proprietor, Sam Neill, Two Paddocks consists of three small estate vineyards in Central Otago. Typically, these site are blended to produce the flagship Two Paddocks Estate Pinot Noir. However, in outstanding seasons, winemaker Dean Shaw also crafts a limited top tier barrel selection and creates an ‘uber Two Paddocks’. Sam has named this rare Central Otago assemblage, The Major General, in honour of his Great Grandfather, Brigadier General Charles Triscott, CMG DSO CB.
VINTAGE COMMENT
Spring and early summer started off well as temperatures steadily increased and regular rainfall meant soil moisture was high enabling the vines to easily access nutrients, so the vines had strong healthy early growth.
February was cooler than typical though with several cold southerly fronts bringing rain, which slowed veraison and seemed to stall what was at that point heading for an early harvest. Then March was far warmer and actually surpassed February for heat accumulation - and an early harvest was back on! Harvest 2022 began on the 24th
WINEMAKERS NOTES
At the discretion of the winemaker, this assemblage is created from the three single vineyard sites and so the ratios will change every year. Hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard. An indigenous fermentation with a total of 66% whole bunch. The wine had 12 months elevage (post fermentation maturation) in French oak barrique, 20% new wood, before being blended and then spent a further 3 months melding in a neutral stainless steel vessel before bottling.
