Welcome to Greywacke e-cellar door

Greywacke (pronounced greywacky) is the wine label of the Judd family and the name of New Zealand’s most abundant bedrock. The understated grey river stones are found throughout Marlborough’s rivers and alluvial vineyard soils. The name was adopted in 1993 by Kevin & Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke stones in the soil.

Since 2009, the Judds have employed a 'keeping it small and hands on' approach at Greywacke, using minimal intervention winemaking to create wines with individuality and personality. The Greywacke team are passionate about producing wines with concentration and texture, aiming for subtle, ripe and delicious-drinking  styles. This is achieved by targeting modest fruit yields and meticulously managing the vine canopy to provide ample sunlight exposure to the grapes - ensuring ripeness of flavour, textural richness and optimum acid balance.

The fruit is sourced from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys sub-regions. All vineyards are sustainably managed with substantial and increasing proportions coming from organically farmed sites. From 2018 Greywacke has been accredited with AMW status (Appellation Marlborough Wine), a certification that ensures provenance, authenticity and integrity.
