Named for the coal seam which was mined during the goldrush and lies beneath the Carrick Vineyards – The Excelsior is our finest expression of Pinot Noir.

A single vineyard wine, created through careful barrel selection and prolonged ageing in the cellar before bottling. Each vintage of Excelsior we celebrate local and NZ artists, showcasing their artwork alongside ours. The 2021 Excelsior features a landscape painting by Neil Driver, of a track in the Carrick Range above Bannockburn – “Slapjack Saddle”.

94 points - Excellent "Complex, varietal and enticing, smoke and flint, a mix of light and dark red berries, flint and mineral. This completeness in the bouquet translates to the palate with a youthful energy, tautness and developing style. Some grippy tannins are accentuated by the acid line, easily contrasted by the core fruit flavours, yet a wine that boasts its need to develop more before it’s ready to drink.
