The story of Clos Ostler begins 38 million years ago, when geological forces lifted an ancient seabed to form the limestone landscape that defines the Waitaki Valley today.

One of New Zealand’s smallest and coolest wine-growing regions, the Waitaki sits close to the margins of viable viticulture. Here, ancient marine limestone soils, warm summer days and a long, cool growing season create conditions that are both challenging and distinctive.

Low-fertility, free-draining soils naturally limit vine vigour, while the extended growing season allows fruit to ripen slowly, developing flavour and complexity while retaining natural acidity.

Set on a north-facing limestone escarpment, Clos Ostler is a family-owned monopole vineyard encompassing varying elevations, soil profiles and microclimates. Planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, each variety responds differently to the vineyard’s conditions, producing wines of precision, structure and complexity that reflect the character of this singular site.
