Te Motu
Kokoro 2021 750ml New Release
Named for the head of Te Motu’s founding family, Terry Dunleavy, Kokoro means ‘the patriarch’ in Māori and ‘the heart of things’ in Japanese.
A Merlot-driven blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, Kokoro 2021 was hand-harvested from low-yielding vines and matured for an average of 21 months—some parcels spending 24 months in French oak, others 18 then held in stainless steel to preserve freshness.
The 2021 vintage is dark-fruited and subtly spiced, with juicy notes of blackberry, raspberry, and a touch of vanilla oak. It shows a vibrant, expressive palate with a supple tannin profile and impressive length. While approachable young, this release has the depth and harmony to reward careful cellaring over the next 10+ years.
May 2025 intial tasting impressions: "Medium ruby with violet hues. Aromas of toasted oak, cherry, dark plum, and hints of vanilla, alongside subtle herbal notes like raspberry leaf. The palate shows raspberry and blackberry with medium-high acidity and low, soft tannins. The finish is moderate and drops away a bit quickly. Feels youthful - excited to see how this evolves with more time in the cellar."
