Martinborough Estate - Late Harvest Pinot Gris 2024 750ml
Sam Kim: Wine Orbit
96/100 - 5 Stars
Seductively fragrant with elegance and complexity, the bouquet shows ripe apricot, orange peel, poached pear, and warm spice aromas, leading to a delectably expressed palate offering fleshy texture and joyful sweetness.
Wonderfully balanced by finely infused acidity, it’s irresistibly tasty and flatteringly classy.
Undeniably well-crafted with generosity and finesse in one.
At its best: 2026 to 2036.
Not all vineyard sites are equal, usually due to soil. However there are ways to extract and
create magic when one is prepared to take risk and step outside their comfort zone. We are
lucky enough to have risked with experiment and achieved. From a very small 400 vine
block of 30 year old pinot gris on pure clay soils, we hang our fruit to the brink of collapse,
not from botrytis but simple hang time to create a sweeter style of pinot gris. The most
exciting thing with this wine is yes, it is sweeter than the traditional pinot gris we also make,
but with more sweetness comes a substantial amount of spiciness and a more intense
minerality is also achieved. A wine of curvaceous structure without the flirtatious intensity of
Gewürztraminer, our Late Harvest Pinot Gris is possibly a little more reserved and grounded.
