Most people have never tasted a wine from the Waitaki Valley. That is exactly why it is worth finding.

It is a narrow river valley in New Zealand's South Island, just north of Central Otago, where the ground is limestone: seabed laid down 38 million years ago, now part of New Zealand's first UNESCO Global Geopark.

Q Wine was founded here in 2003 by Jules Stephan. Jules Matthews took it from bare land to a planted vineyard in 2005, and built the brand around it. There was no long tradition to live up to, only the question of what this ground could do.

The valley is cool, dry and slow. Waitaki is the last region in New Zealand to harvest, and in May, deep into our southern autumn, there may still be fruit on the vines. That unhurried season is what keeps these wines fresh.

Q comes from a single vineyard. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Rosé, made in small batches, by hand, with as little intervention as the season allows. Nothing is blended away, so every bottle tastes of its year.

The critics have found us. Q is one of The Real Review's Top Wineries of New Zealand 2026, and our Pinot Noir is included in its Wine Classification of New Zealand. Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas chose our 2024 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for his Top NZ Wine Selection 2025.
