Welcome to Ashwell Vineyards e-cellar door

Welcome to Ashwell Vineyards. We are a genuine, family owned, boutique vineyard, producing premium wines.

We are located in the heart of Martinborough, just over one hour from Wellington, New Zealand.

Our focus is on producing premium, environmentally sustainable wines. We specialise in Pinot Noir, but also produce Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

We hope you enjoy discovering our wines and sharing our passion

In 1989, John and Vivienne Phipps purchased a block of land on the now-famous Martinborough terraces. Together with their daughters, the Phipps family lovingly planted several thousand vines by hand; this being the beginning of Ashwell Vineyards.

The vineyard, at its current size of approximately 5 acres, is small enough to remain a true boutique vineyard. The vines are tended mostly by hand (including harvesting), ensuring high quality grapes and wines. All wines are created with grapes grown on our own vineyard.

The majority of our vines are Pinot Noir, the specialty wine of the region. Our Pinot Noir is regional-styled and a past gold medal winner at the prestigious Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

We are not only serious about the quality of our wines, but also our environmental impact. Ashwell Vineyards’ winemaking and vineyard processes are accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, verifying our sustainable practices.

Reviews

Pinot Noir 2010

Silver Medal Decanter Asia Awards

"The bouquet is beautifully perfumed showing dark plum, game and savoury mushroom characters with a hint of dried herb notes. It’s firm and sturdy on the palate displaying silky texture, refreshing acidity and fine-grained, compact tannins. A nicely drying finish makes this a superb food wine to partner rich meat dishes."

Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Bob Campbell MW 93/100

"Reasonably dense wine with lifted floral and brigth red berry flavours. Attractive sweet fruit showing good purity and a backbone of fine tannins. Supple Cabernet with energy."

Chardonnay 2016

Bob Campbell MW 92/100

"Intense and flavoursome wine with citrus/grapefruit, toast, roasted nut, brioche and subtle flavours. The wine is linear and relatively complex with a lingering finish. Subtle and sophisticated Chardonnay.”
